Chagos Islands
The top UN court has told Britain to give control of the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius. Britain has been in control of the archipelago since 1965, three years before Mauritius was granted independence, but Mauritius argues that the islands were unlawfully taken from them. In the 1960s and 1970s, Britain exiled Chagossians from the islands, and most now live in the UK, Mauritius, or Seychelles with no permission to return. This eviction allowed the U.S. to build an airbase on Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago. The map depicts the location of the U.S. airbase in the ChagosaArchipelago.
