Pakistan
Truck Fire Tragedy
A truck explosion in Bahawalpur, Pakistan, claimed the lives of 157 when it overturned and rolled off of a road this past Sunday. People on the road rushed to collect the gas, a valuable commodity in Pakistan, as it spilled from the overturned tanker, despite warning from the police to stay away from the scene. When the tanker suddenly caught fire, the blast killed over 150 and injured another 100. “You can blame poverty 100 percent,” said Makhdoom Syed Hassan Gillani, a local parliamentary representative. With a pained voice, he concluded, “It was poverty. It was greed. It was ignorance.”

Colombia
Colombia Boat Sinking
At least six people are dead and 31 missing after a tourist boat packed with 160 passengers capsized at the Guatape reservoir near the Colombian city, Medellin. It is unclear what caused the boat to sink but some local reporters say that the boat was overcrowded. Local residents reported that the boat had sunk twice before but had been repaired since.

Iraq
Dwindling Numbers
Iraqi forces have successfully repelled an Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) counteroffensive in the city of Mosul. As the Iraqi army closed in on the inner city, ISIL deployed suicide bombers to stop the advance, but the army was successful in fending it off. Iraqi leadership estimates that there are only “a couple hundred” insurgents remaining, and are confined to a 2.5 square kilometer block in the center-city.

This map shows the last few city blocks under ISIL control, in red. Click on the map to learn more.
