Poland
Refugee Crisis on Belarus Border
The Polish government has requested that President Andrzej Duda declare a state of emergency in the eastern border regions that Poland shares with Belarus, in order to address the stream of refugees and migrants attempting to enter the country. Belarus has been accused by Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia of sending migrants across their borders as retribution for sanctions imposed on Belarus for human rights violations against protestors and dissidents contesting the results of a presidential election last year. More than 3,000 migrants crossed the border into Poland from Belarus in August alone, and currently waiting in the border region are 30 Afghan refugees suffering from lack of food and medical care. This map depicts the regions on the border with Belarus where Polish lawmakers are seeking to declare a state of emergency. Click on the map to learn more.

Air Pollution Cuts Life Expectancy
According to a new report by Air Quality Life Index (AQLI), lead by the Energy Policy Institute at University of Chicago, air pollution can reduce life expectancy for Indians by up to nine years. In northern India alone, 480 million people are exposed to the “most extreme levels of air pollution in the world,” with pollution levels 10 times more harmful than anywhere else. The report added that Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and India make up one fourth of the global population while consistently landing in the top five most polluted countries, making people in these countries extremely vulnerable to global pandemics and the effects of the climate crisis. The report suggests that strong air quality policies could add an additional average of five years in life expectancy. This map depicts northern India states that would benefit greatly from stronger air policies.
