Portugal
Wildfires Spreading
Record-breaking temperatures over the Iberian Peninsula (115 F) have created prime conditions for wildfires. In the Monchique region of Portugal, about 55 miles south of Lisbon, over 76,000 acres have been affected by the wildfires. At least 45 people have been injured and over 2,000 have evacuated the area. 1,150 firefighters are fighting the fires with assistance from neighboring countries. An upcoming drop in temperature this week may cause the fire’s progression to slow. This map depicts the extent of fires burning in the Monchique region of Portugal. Thousands of young people have taken to the street in Dhaka, Bangladesh in recent days, following the death of two university students who were hit by a speeding bus last Sunday. While calling for the government to regulate Bangladesh’s chaotic roads and improve road safety, protestors have been attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets by the police-  at least 140 people have been injured.
