Qatar
A List of Demands
Saudi Arabia and Arab countries have released an official list of demands that they wish to be fulfilled before considering mending ties with Qatar. The demands include shutting down the Al Jazeera news network, breaking ties with radical Islamist organizations, and shutting down the planned military base in Turkey. Qatari officials have yet to respond to the list but in the past, they have denied any connection to extremists and have stated that they refuse to negotiate while under a blockade.

This map shows the locations of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab Nations that have severed ties with Qatar. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
Yellowstone Grizzly Bear
After 42 years on the endangered species list, the Yellowstone grizzly bear will lose its federal protections under the Endangered Species Act instituted in 1975. According to the National Park Service, the Yellowstone grizzly bear population increased from 136 in 1975  to about 700 in 2017. The bears have expanded their occupied habitat by more than 50%. Others are wary to take the bear off the list because the grizzly bear is one of the slowest reproducing mammals on the planet and it can take decades to reverse a population decline. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke called this population recovery “one of America’s great conservation successes.”

This map depicts grizzly bear population density in Yellowstone National Park in the years 1983, 1993, 2003 and 2012. Click on the map to learn more.

Brazil
Action in the Amazon
The country of Norway has issued a $1 billion threat to Brazil due to its increased deforestation activity in the Amazon. Norway has been one of the largest contributors to Brazil’s Amazon Fund, which is dedicated to conservation and rainforest protection. From 2008-2014, there was a steady decline in deforestation, but that progress has since reversed. Norway said that if this trend is not immediately curtailed, it would terminate all future contributions.

This map shows the areas, in red, that have been damaged due to deforestation. Click on the map to learn more.
