Aeroflot Plane Crash
On Sunday, forty-one people on board a Russian Aeroflot passenger plane were killed, including two children, after the aircraft caught fire as it attempted a return emergency landing at Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow. The aircraft, a Sukhoi Superjet-100, left the airport at 18:02 local time (15:02 GMT) for Murmansk in stormy weather but quickly turned back for an emergency landing. Witnesses and passengers claim the aircraft was struck by lightning.  In accordance with passengers, the pilot claims the lightning caused him to lose contact with the radio communications tower. Investigators probing the cause of the crash have made no official comment on lightning as a reason for the crash.

India
Fani Makes Landfall
Cyclone Fani made landfall on the densely populated eastern coast of India on Friday.  The storm hit Odisha, India with winds of 125 mph and was later downgraded from “very severe” to “severe.” The massive evacuation effort along the coast prevented many deaths; at least 1.2 million people were moved to safety. The cyclone moved through India and into Bangladesh, where it destroyed over 1,000 homes and left at least 5 dead. Many low-lying lands remain inundated by the storms’ heavy rains and relief efforts are underway.

Thailand
Coronation Drawing to a Close
This past Saturday, a three-day procession of rituals and traditions began to coronate 66-year-old King Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as King Rama X, the tenth king of the Chakri dynasty. He was appointed in 2016 when his father died after reigning for 70 years. King Vajiralongkorn delayed the coronation due to the mourning period for his father. In total, the events reportedly cost  1,000,000,000 in Thai baht or $31.2 million. Reports say King Vajiralongkorn will have to gain the trust of his citizens after spending much of his time abroad as well as stepping into the shoes of his highly revered father.
