Russia
Coldest Village on Earth
In an area where it is not common for eyelashes to freeze or cars to be kept running when they are not being used, Oymyakon, the coldest human settlement known is experiencing abnormally extreme temperature drops. This week their recorded temperature read around minus-80 degrees Farenheight. Schools remain open around minus-40 degrees, but due to the drop in temperature they were closed on Tuesday. Two men died after their car was stalled and they had to continue their route journey by foot.

China
World’s Largest Air Purifier
In attempt to fix the overwhelming amount of smog in China, the capital of Shaanxi Province in north-west China, Xi’an, has built a 328 ft tall air purifier tower. The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Earth Environment put together a research team to maintain a close eye on the success of the purifier after its completion in May 2016. Cao Junji, the head of research, developed a plan to set up air quality monitors in the surrounding area. He confirmed that the tower has purified over 10 million cubic meters per day. The results are very promising and the people of Xi’an and bordering areas are optimistic about the pursuit to clear the air in China.

Mexico
World’s longest underwater cave system discovered by divers in Mexico
Archaeologists discovered Sac Actun, an extensive network of caverns off the eastern coast of Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula. Sac Actun measures 216 miles (~347 kms) long. The dedicated researchers of the subterranean waters working on the Gran Acuifero Maya project found that Sac Actun, first believed to be 163 miles long, is now known to be connected to the Dos Ojos cave system. This is now believed to be the largest flooded cave on the planet and contains over 100 ancient artifacts, including Mayan ceramics and graves. The discovery could provide further insight into how the rituals, the pilgrimage sites, and pre-Hispanic settlements lead to the emergence of the Maya civilization who lived in the area.
