Village Evacuation Canceled
The Russian military advised residents in a village near a navy testing range to evacuate on Tuesday in preparation for unspecified activities. Residents of Nyonska, a village of about 500, frequently receive orders to temporarily evacuate due to work carried out at the military site. These evacuation orders came after a liquid-fuel rocket engine exploded last Thursday at the navy range, killing at least 7 and causing a brief increase in radiation levels. The evacuation orders were then retracted hours later as the plans to conduct work on the testing grounds were canceled. The latter decision was confirmed by a government spokeswoman from the nearby city of Severodvinsk.

Endangered Species Act Revised
Interior Secretary David Bernhardt announced on Monday the Trump administration’s plans to overhaul the Endangered Species Act, a landmark conservation law credited with saving the bald eagle, grizzly bear, and the American alligator from extinction. The policy change makes it easier to remove a species from the endangered list and loosens protections for threatened species. Previously, regulators could only make scientific assessments to determine whether a species warrants protection, but the policy change now allows them to consider economic costs. A recent U.N. report estimates 1 million species are at risk of extinction.

Greece
Wildfire on Island
A state of emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Evia after a wildfire broke out yesterday. The blaze forced the evacuation of more than 500 people from several nearby villages and a monastery. Fanned by strong winds, smoke from the fire has spread all the way to Athens in the south. Specially equipped aircraft from Italy are dumping water on the fire in an effort to contain it, while officials said the situation had improved by morning as firefighters spent the night battling flames.
