Saudi Arabia
Attacks on Oil Facilities
A series of strikes on the Khurais oilfield and the Abqaiq oil-processing facility, the world’s largest, halted the daily production of over 5 million barrels of oil. This disruption, which represents 6% of the global crude supply, initially caused oil prices to rise by at least 10%. Houthi rebels, an Iran-backed group engaged in the civil war in Yemen, have claimed responsibility for the attack. Meanwhile, US officials blame Iran, pointing toward satellite imagery that shows the attacks came from the north and west, heightening tensions between the countries in recent months.

Solomon Islands
Diplomatic Cut Off
The government of the Solomon Islands has cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan after 36 years, leaving 16 countries with official ties to Taiwan. The move comes after China offered the island nation $8.5 million in development funds to displace support from Taiwan. The Solomon Islands’ cabinet voted 27 in favor of the diplomatic switch, with none opposed and six abstentions. Taiwan and China have been rivals since the end of their civil war in 1949; China views Taiwan as a territory yet Taiwan and 16 other supporting nations view it as a sovereign state. Tensions between Taiwan and China intensified recently after Taiwan refused to accept the “one China” policy.
This map depicts nations around the world which still have diplomatic ties with Taiwan, excluding the Solomon Islands. Click on the map to learn more.

Spain
Severe Weather
Two days of record rainfall and gale-force winds have caused severe flash flooding and tornadoes in southeastern Spain. At least six people have died and an estimated 3,500 evacuated from their homes. More than 1,100 military personnel were deployed in rescue operations in the regions of Valencia, Murcia and eastern Andalucía. The storms caused chaos on roads and public transport, with two airports in Murcia and Almeria closing, leaving travelers stranded. The record rainfall and winds are part of a yearly fall meteorological phenomenon occurring in this part of Spain known locally as “gota fria” (cold drop).
