Saudi Arabia
Heir to the Throne
In an unexpected reorganization of the Saudi royal order, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has named his son, Mohammed bin Salman, as heir to the throne. This decision is an overturning of the Saudi King’s initial choice of his nephew in 2015. The decision leads to a greater consolidation of power within the family and experts believe that it will ultimately lead to social and economic modernization efforts of the Saudi government.

United States
Republican Victory
Republican Karen Handel defeated Democrat Jon Ossof in the most expensive U.S. House race in history in Georgia’s sixth district at over $50 million spent by both sides. Handel won 51.9% of the votes while Ossof won 48.1%. The contested House seat was previously held by Tom Price, a Republican. The seat has been in Republican control for nearly 40 years since Newt Gingrich won in 1979. Some political experts see this election as a referendum on Trump’s first few months as President. Ms. Handel is the first Republican woman sent to Congress from Georgia.

Belgium
Terror at the Train Station
Belgian police shot an attempted terrorist yesterday in a Brussels train station after his explosive device failed to fully detonate. The failed explosions set the terrorist, a Moroccan national known to police, on fire, at which point he ran at nearby police, who then shot him. Belgian intelligence is stating that while the Moroccan is himself a terrorist, he is not affiliated with any organized terrorist groups and that this attempted attack was not carried out by the Islamic State.

This map shows the location of the Molenbeek neighborhood in Brussels, where the Moroccan and several other terrorists have made their home. Click on the map to learn more.
