Protests in Catalonia
Thousands of protesters marched on the streets of Barcelona this week, after the Spanish Supreme Court jailed nine pro-independence Catalonian leaders. Groups of protesters marched along the highways towards Barcelona, where they have surrounded many of the city’s iconic landmarks, stopping traffic, closing the airport, major churches, and postponing the football match between Barcelona and Madrid. The protests are in support of an independence movement in the region, after leaders called for a referendum on Catalonia’s position in the nation, though the Spanish courts have deemed this illegal. Protests in Barcelona have led to clashes with police, and a general worker’s strike is planned, with the demonstrations leading up to elections in November.

China
Leasing Islands
Leaked papers reveal that a Chinese company, China Sam Group, will lease Tulagi island from the Solomon Islands. The decision was signed in late September, just a few days after China gained the Solomon Islands as a diplomatic ally against Taiwan. The leaked documents which outline the 75-year lease make mention of building a refinery on Tulagi, which has a protected deepwater harbor. Tulagi was once the site of a Japanese military base and is a strategic location near the contested South China Sea.

England
Explorer To Be Reburied
The remains of Captain Matthew Flinders – the first British explorer to circumnavigate Australia are to be reburied in his home village more than 200 years after his death. The explorer will be reburied at the Church of St Mary and the Holy Rood in Lincolnshire, England following a request by his descendants and the local community. His remains were discovered during the excavation of the St. James’s burial ground, in Euston, London, for the new High-Speed rail project HS2. Archaeologists were able to identify Flinder’s coffin by a lead breastplate placed on top. Flinders died aged 40 on July 19, 1814, the day after the publication of A Voyage to Terra Australis, which described his 1802-1803 circumnavigation of Australia and proved that it was a continent.
