Sri Lanka Bombings
On Sunday, at least 290 people—including 35 foreign nationals—were killed and over 500 were injured in a series of coordinated bombings across Sri Lanka. According to officials, all the attacks were carried out by suicide bombers. Three churches in Negombo, Batticaloa, and Colombo’s Kochchikade district were targeted during Easter services. Blasts also rocked the Shangri-La, Kingsbury, and Cinnamon Grand hotels in Colombo, near a private terminal of the city’s main bus station where police recovered 87 detonators. No group claimed responsibility for the attacks but the government named the National Thowheed Jamath, a local Islamist group, as the main suspect.

Earthquake Hits the Philippines
On Monday, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the Filipino capital of Manila and its outer provinces. It was reported the epicenter of the quake was Castillejos, 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Manila. Five people were killed in building collapses and rescue efforts were delayed due to power outages. All major transportation infrastructure, such as bridges, highways, and the airport, were temporarily closed to assess the damage from the quake. Aftershocks were expected, but the local disaster monitoring agency believed there was no tsunami threat. Due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Manila is susceptible to more earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Agent Orange Cleanup
The US has launched a $183 million dollar ten-year clean-up operation of the Agent Orange spray at the Bien Hoa airport, outside Ho Chi, Vietnam. The airbase, considered the most contaminated in the country, is the latest site scheduled for rehabilitation after the Danang airbase’s clean-up last year. During the Vietnam War, US forces sprayed 80 million liters (21 million gallons) of Agent Orange over South Vietnam between 1962 and 1971 in an attempt to uncover the enemy’s hiding places. The toxic defoliant is still blamed for severe birth defects, cancers, and disabilities.
