Sudan: Coup d’état

Sudan
Coup d’état
After a 30-year rule, Sudanese president, Omar al-Bashir, was overthrown by a military coup following months of protests. This is the 15th military coup in Sudan since 1952, the highest number of all African countries.  General Awad Ibn Auf was sworn in as the head of a military council that replaced al-Bashir after the coup.  Protest organizers fear that a new military government will not allow for the civilian-led government they are fighting for.  Organizers have defied the new 10 pm curfew and staged a sit-in protest in front of the army headquarters in the capital, Khartoum. Others have raised concern that the ousting of al-Bashir will threaten Sudan’s recent peace deal with neighboring South Sudan.

Indonesia
Tsunami Warnings
The United States Geological Survey reported a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, at a depth of 10.5 miles, struck off the east coast of Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. Tremors were felt throughout the island and hundreds of miles away.  Indonesian officials issues a tsunami warning following the earthquake.  Residents of Palu, located on the other side of Sulawesi,  ran in fear after feeling tremors from the earthquake.  Palu was devastated last September after a massive tsunami destroyed the city and took the lives of over 3,000 people.
