Syria: Air-Strike Warnings

Syria
Air-Strike Warnings
An international air traffic control agency, Eurocontrol, has issued a 72-hour warning against flying over Syria.  This warning comes as discussions are on the rise of potential air strikes by western allies into Syria. Eurocontrol has stated that air-to-ground and/or cruise missiles, which would be used in an airstrike, have the potential to disrupt radio signals in the region.  Airlines have rerouted their flights in the eastern Mediterranean to avoid flying over Syrian airspace. The debate over striking Syria is a response to the recent chemical weapons attack on citizens in Douma – which left at least 42 people dead.   This map depicts the flights rerouted over Syria. Child Rape Brings Religious Tension
In the small town of Kathua in the Jammu-Kashmir state, eight-year-old Asifa Bano, a Muslim girl, was brutally raped and murdered in January this year. Police have now arrested eight men including a retired government official, four police officers, and a juvenile in connection with Asifa’s death. Her case has split the region along religious lines. Investigators believe that the accused men wished to terrorize the Gujjar community into leaving Jammu. Thousands of Hindu activists have marched in demand for the release of the men, claiming that they had been framed. The case has drawn intense reactions and fear across the country. This map depicts the small town of Kathua. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
E. Coli Outbreak Continues
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that they are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (O157:H7) infections. There have been 17 cases in 7 states (Washington, Idaho, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut) in the past 4 weeks. The ill range in age from 12 to 84. E. coli is highly contagious, via contaminated food, water, or contact with contaminated surfaces. The CDC says the best preventative measures are to wash fruits and vegetables, cook meat thoroughly, and wash hands frequently. This map depicts the seven states with current cases of E. Coli. Click on the map to learn more.
