Assad Tells U.S. to Leave
In a recent interview with Russia Today, President Bashar Al Assad of Syria expressed that the U.S. has “lost all its cards” in the Syrian conflict. He advised that the U.S. government should learn its lesson from its experience in Iraq and pull American troops out of the country. These comments are in response to President Trump calling Assad an “animal.” President Assad’s forces have been battling opposition groups and ISIL since 2011. Tensions in Syria have been increasing due to the simultaneous presence of the U.S., Russia, and Iran. This animated map shows American, Russian, and Iranian military locations. Pacific Command Renamed
On Wednesday, the U.S. Secretary of Defense announced U.S. Pacific Command, responsible for overseeing U.S. military operations in Asia, will be renamed to U.S. Indo-Pacific Command during a change of command ceremony at its headquarters in Hawaii. For the past several years, the U.S. and India have been forging stronger security ties in order to counter China’s increasingly aggressive armed forces in the area; the rhetorical change is in recognition of the growing relationship between the U.S. and India. No additional resources will be assigned to the command, the name change is “ultimately a symbolic act” to secure regional safety. This map depicts the area of responsibility for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Click on the map to learn more.

Sears to Close 72 More Stores
Sears Holdings Corp., the parent company of Sears and K-Mart department stores, has announced it will close 72 stores in 2018 as more than 100 stores have been identified as unprofitable. The company closed 400 stores in the past 12 months. While most of the decline in overall revenue came from previous store closings, sales fell by 12% at stores that remained open, resulting in a loss of $424 million dollars. Some experts believe the company is on the edge of bankruptcy. Sears maintains that the company is currently under transformation and further adjustments will be managed. This map depicts the total number of Sears and K-Mart stores in the United States. Click on the map to learn more.
