Displacement Amid Airstrikes
Nearly 1 million Syrians have been displaced since December amid ongoing conflict between Turkey, Syria, and Russia in northern Syria. This is the biggest mass displacement of Syrians since the war began almost 9 years ago. Aid officials express increasing concern they do not have the supplies or means to assist more than 900,000 people in dire need. Continuous airstrikes by Russian-backed Syrian forces have prompted a similar response from Turkey- heightening the instability, lack of shelter, and violence experienced by the displaced. As Turkey maintains a closed border along Syria, those seeking refuge find shelter in crowded, ad-hoc camps hosting thousands of other displaced persons.

Massive Pileup Near Montreal
Two people were killed and dozens more injured Wednesday after a massive pileup involving about 200 vehicles south of Montreal. Officials stated the pileup happened around 12:30 pm (local time) along Highway 15, which runs parallel to the St. Lawrence River. Reports indicated at least 60 people were injured with 20 of those listed in serious conditions. Quebec Transport Minister François Bonnardel said the crash was attributed to a “strong” snow squall coming from the river that “suddenly” generated a total lack of visibility for drivers. He added that this area of Highway 15 is usually safe and had twice been snow-plowed in the hour before the accident.

Illegal Underground Factory
The Spanish Civil Guard raided an illegal cannabis and counterfeit cigarette factory hidden beneath a mountain in the city of Monda in the southern province of Málaga and rescued six trapped workers. The factory consisted of a series of tunnels located 13-feet below ground accessible only through a covered trap door. Following the arrest of twenty people charged with the operation of the factory last week, the workers in the factory were stranded with no supply of oxygen. When Spanish police raided the factory, they found six workers from Ukraine and Lithuania struggling to breath. The workers have been released pending the results of further investigation.
