Syria
IS Captives
In the battle for IS’ last enclave, IS militants are reportedly hiding among civilians to deter U.S.-backed SDF troops from fully removing them from Baghuz, a village along the Euphrates River.  While IS territory in the area has significantly scaled back in the past few months, an SDF spokesperson has expressed difficulty over a full eradication due to civilians who are still in the area.  U.N.  Human rights chief, Michelle Bachele, also reports that militants are actively preventing some 200 families from leaving the area.  Another source writes that ISIS militants are using civilians as human shields.

Uranium Exposure
For two decades, three buckets of uranium ore were stored in the Grand Canyon’s museum collection building, meaning that anyone who passed through the area was exposed to radiation. The building gets around 1,000 visitors a year, and the amount of radiation was high enough to expose children to unsafe levels within 3 seconds, and adults within 30 seconds. There are also new claims for uranium mining that were put on hold, because there was evidence that the mining was contaminating water, which would directly impact the Havasupai people who live at the bottom of the canyon.

This map depicts the locations of uranium mines and claims. Click on the map to learn more.
