Syria
Israel Airstrike
On Wednesday, Israel carried out airstrikes against Iranian forces located near Damascus. The strike comes after the Israeli military intercepted four rockets near the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights on Tuesday. The four rockets were launched by Iranian forces in Syria. While nobody was harmed from Tuesday’s strike, an estimated 21 people were killed during the Israeli airstrikes. According to the Israel Defense Forces, the strikes focused on Syrian and Iranian “terror targets” located near the city. Further, the strikes destroyed several Syrian aerial defense batteries. These strikes, along with other clashes between the countries, have contributed to increasing tensions near Israel’s northeastern border.

Papua New Guinea
Independence Vote
Bougainville, a small island group within Papua New Guinea, is voting to become the world’s newest country. This referendum has been expected since a 2001 peace agreement that ended brutal unrest. The island of Bougainville is home to a wealth of mineral resources. However, residents have grown tired of the mainland’s exploitation of these riches, with the tensions mounting into a decades-long civil war. Through this poll, citizens will be asked to decide between greater autonomy or complete independence. Although the predicted outcome is sovereignty, concerns over the nation’s small economy are widening, questioning the feasibility of independence.

Missing Cat Found 1,200 Miles From Home
Sasha the cat, originally from Portland, Oregon, had been missing for 5 years when he was found by an animal shelter in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The animal shelter, which is 1,200 miles away from Saha’s home, was able to locate the Portland owner by scanning Sasha’s microchip. Shortly after, Sasha was flown back to Portland and reunited with his owner. American Airlines sponsored Sasha’s ride home so that his owner wouldn’t have to miss a day of medical school to retrieve the cat. How Sasha made it from Portland to Santa Fe remains a mystery, but the owner seems to think he somehow hitched a ride along the way.
