Syria
Medical Evacuation
In Eastern Ghouta, a Damascus suburb, the Syrian government has allowed the evacuation of nearly 30 critically ill people. So far, four people have been evacuated and another 25 are expected in the coming days as part of an agreed deal by the government and rebels. The area, which is home to an estimated 400,000 people, has been besieged since 2013 by the government. Recent tightening of the siege has led to severe shortages of food, fuel and medicine. The International Committee of the Red Cross, Syrian Red Crescent and the Syrian American Medical Society are among the organizations involved in aiding the evacuations. This map depicts the areas different armed forces controlled in Iraq and Syria between the time span of July and October 2017. Click on the map to expand and to learn more.
