Proposed Buffer Zone
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan proposed a 32km “safety zone” along the Turkey-Syria border to hinder Kurdish forces – whom he considers a terrorist group, from encroaching into Turkey’s borders. The White House has promised that the allied Kurdish forces would not be harmed as the U.S. continues its withdrawal from Syria and is working with Turkey to ensure a fair outcome. After tense negotiations by the two NATO partners, President Trump and President Erdogan affirm the safety zone is a positive step in dealing with the fate of the Kurdish group.

Deadly Blast Targets U.S. Forces
A suicide bomber detonated a vest beside a patrol in the city of Manbij, Syria – a city under control by the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led militia Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). It is unclear how many people were killed. The Islamic State claimed responsibility, confirming they targeted a recruitment center. Although the SDF did not disclose the exact location of the blast, there are reports the bombing took place in a central district of the city housing military offices.

Zimbabwe
Fuel Protests
Today is the third and final day of the stay-at-home protests over Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 150% fuel price hike. In two major cities, Harare and Bulawayo, over 200 Zimbabwean civilians, including prominent political figure Evan Mawarire, were arrested today and will face public order charges. While schools and government buildings were shuttered Monday with reports of sporadic violence, some residents say soldiers and police patrolling Harare were beating people in their homes. There is little foot or road traffic; shops, banks, and restaurants remained closed.
