Syria: Tensions Rise

Syria
Tensions Rise
There was an air strike on a Homs T-4 airbase in Douma, the last rebel-held town in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta region. This incident followed soon after an alleged chemical-weapons attack on a Damascus suburb. The Union of Medical Relief Organization told BBC the Damascus Rural Specialty Hospital had confirmed 70 deaths; another 1,000 people are suffering from symptoms consistent with chlorine gas exposure. The Pentagon has denied Syrian claims that these were U.S. led attacks. Syria’s key ally, Russia, said that claims of the chemical attack “were staged” and that Israel is responsible for the air strike. This map depicts who controls the areas in the zones of attack. Click on the map to learn more.

Hungary
Election Results
Viktor Orban has won Hungary’s prime minister election for the third time. Orban’s right-winged party Fidsez, also secured a two-thirds majority in parliament.  Voter turnout stood at 68.8% which is higher than the 61.73% turnout in the 2014 prime minster election. Orban’s campaign focused heavily on anti-migrant messages and strong resistance against EU integration. Results show that the Fidsez party received heavy voter support in rural areas throughout Hungary. This map depicts election results by district in Hungary. Click on the map to expand.

Germany
Van Plows Through Crowd
On Saturday, a van crashed into a crowd in the city of Muenster, Germany, killing at least two people and injuring approximately 20 others. The delivery van jumped the sidewalk, running through the outside area of an outdoor cafe near the popular pub, Kiepenkerl, in the historic downtown area of the western German city. The driver of the vehicle, a German citizen, shot and killed himself after driving into the crowd. Police do not know the man’s motives but are calling it a deliberate attack and treating the incident as an act of terrorism – currently, there are no indications of ties to Islamic extremism. They are also investigating reports that other suspects may have fled the scene.  This map depicts where the van crashed into the crowd in Munster, Germany. Click on the map to learn more.
