Syria
Terrorist Leader Killed
On Sunday, the White House announced that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed in a US military operation. The operation ends a years-long manhunt for Baghdadi, who rose to prominence in 2014 after declaring a caliphate over the ISIS-occupied territories in Iraq and Syria. US aircraft traveled from a military base in Erlib in Iraq to siege Baghdadi’s compound in the village of Barisha in the Idlib province of northern Syria, just south of the border with Turkey. Baghdadi died by detonating a suicide vest after being cornered by military dogs in a tunnel below the compound. The US provided advance warning of the operation to several powers in the region, including Turkey, Iraq, Kurdish forces, and Russia, which controls the airspace over the rebel-controlled region.

Homecoming Party Shooting
On Saturday, a gunman opened fire at an off-campus college party in Greenville, Texas that left two people dead and an estimated 12 injured. According to authorities, the gunman opened fire around midnight at a Halloween homecoming party at a hangar-like facility called The Party Venue. More than 750 people were in attendance, many of them students at a campus of Texas A&M University in Commerce, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) away. Police stated they are still searching for the gunman, whose identity remains unknown but believe the shooter may have been targeting just one person. Later, on Sunday night, gunfire erupted during a vigil held for the victims killed. Officials stated there were no reported injuries from the vigil shooting.

On Friday, a Russian soldier killed eight fellow servicemen and wounded two others during a change of guard at a military base in Siberia. The incident occurred at Russia’s military base near the town of Gorny, located in the Trans-Baikal Territory, a remote mountainous region during the border with China and Mongolia. The shooter was a 20-year soldier serving under the country’s mandatory military service program for males age 18-27, which typically lasts for twelve months. Russia’s Defense Ministry suggested that the perpetrator had suffered a mental breakdown.

Friday’s Answer

Q: How many countries claim to own territory in Antarctica?

A: Seven
The 1959 Antarctic Treaty acknowledges the territorial claims made by Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom. However, the treaty does not recognize the sovereignty of any of these claims, which often overlap, and forbids signatories from making any additional claims.
