Syria
Turkey Targets Kurdish Fighters
Turkish forces attacked Kurdish enclaves in Afrin, Syria with an offensive strike this Monday morning.  Turkey targeted the region on foot after launching an air attack Sunday on YPG militia, an organization backed by the U.S.  Turkey is calling this attack “Operation Olive Branch” and is targeting groups they deem to be terrorist organizations. Their ground offensive, equipped with tanks and specially trained militia, aims to rid the area of their opposition while avoiding citizen causalities. Eight people died and another thirteen were injured in the attack.

Afghanistan
Hotel Bombing
Saturday evening six gunmen entered the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan and killed at least 22 people in a siege that lasted 11 hours. As security forces attempted to take back control of the hotel in the early morning, the six gunmen moved through all five floors shooting and throwing grenades into rooms. The Haqqani militant group, a networked ally of the Taliban, has been blamed for this attack by the Afghani government. The Intercontinental Hotel was previously attacked by the Taliban in 2011.

World
Women’s Sister Marches
On Saturday, January 20, 2018 – the first anniversary of last year’s Women’s March – women and men around the world took to the streets wearing pink knitted hats to display their solidarity. In addition to the flagship march in Washington, D.C., major marches took place in Toronto, Montreal, Mexico City, Paris, Berlin, London, Melbourne, and Sydney. In 2017, an estimated 3.2-5.2 million people participated in the marches across the United States, with total worldwide participation estimated at over five million. The 2017 Women’s March took place a day after President Trump’s inauguration. 2018 March organizers stated that the primary focus this year is to promote equal rights for women and marginalized groups. Planned Parenthood, the NAACP, and the National Organization for Women and Human Rights Watch were among the 200 organizations that have signed on as partners.
