Syria
White Helmets Evacuate
On Sunday, 422 White Helmets were evacuated from Syria amid violence as government forces reclaim the last rebel strongholds in the country. The White Helmets (Syrian Civil Defense) are a humanitarian group of civilian volunteer rescuers that function as emergency forces in opposition-held parts of Syria. At the request of U.S., Canadian, and European allies, the White Helmets and their families were evacuated through Israel by Israeli Defense Forces into Jordan. Members of the group were trapped in the Quneitra province, along the frontier of Israel’s Golan Heights, amid an offensive by the Syrian government. At least hundreds of White Helmets remain trapped in Syria and are in immediate danger. The White Helmets are considered enemies by the Syrian government and have been targeted by attacks for their rescue efforts. This map depicts Quneitra where the White Helmet evacuees were evacuated from. Canada
Toronto Shooting
On Sunday evening a man open fired on Danforth Avenue in Toronto, Canada, which resulted in two deaths and left 12 others wounded. The suspect, who was later found dead after escaping the scene, began shooting at cafes and restaurants in Toronto’s Greektown neighborhood with a handgun. Some of the injured were treated on site, while others were rushed to nearby hospitals. Witnesses said they heard 25 gunshots. There is still very little information about the attacker as police are still investigating. It is also unclear whether he was shot by police or killed himself.  This map depicts the location of the shooting. Click on the map to learn more.

Japan
Heat Wave
A heat wave in Japan has claimed over 40 lives this month as temperatures reach record highs. Monday afternoon (local time), the highest recorded temperature of 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41.1 degrees Celsius) was recorded outside in Kumagaya, near Tokyo. Kyoto sustained temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit for 7 days straight. Air-conditioning is not common in Japan due to cultural beliefs and the elderly have been particularly affected by the heat wave. This intense heat wave has made the flood and landslide relief efforts in western Japan even more difficult. This map depicts recorded temperatures across Japan (Celsius). Click on the map to learn more.
