Syria
Withdrawal of U.S. Troops
The White House is considering a “full” and “rapid” withdrawal of 2,000 ground troops from Syria under the premise that the U.S. has defeated the Islamic State and no longer needs to be in the area. This shift comes after the U.S. announced in September it would maintain its presence in Syria until the overall war is settled in order to act as a bulwark against the expanding influence of Iran.

Democratic Republic of Congo
Ebola Outbreak
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), one of the worst Ebola outbreaks in history has claimed the lives of 319 people. The DRC Ministry of Health said Tuesday there are 542 confirmed cases so far. North Kivu, the most populous province in DRC, is the epicenter of the outbreak and includes the cities of Beni, Kalunguta, and Mabalako; there are also cases reported in the neighboring province of Ituri. Internally displaced people and refugees from neighboring Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan could potentially spread the epidemic farther.

Musk Tunnel
For the first time, Elon Musk offered rides in a proof-of-concept tunnel located near Boring Company’s headquarters in Hawthorne, Los Angeles. The tunnel is 1.14 miles long and serves as a model for Musk’s idea: a subterranean transport route as a solution for L.A.’s major traffic problem, which will take many more years to fully complete. The CEO claims his tunnel-boring technology is far cheaper than conventional tunnel boring methods, citing the $10 million cost of his newly revealed tunnel versus what he claims would have otherwise cost up to $1 billion.
