Open-Source COVID Hotspot Map
Amid a recent surge of COVID-19 cases in Taiwan, citizen mappers have created an open-source map to track the locations of confirmed cases announced by Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC). According to Taiwan News, when COVID cases are announced by the CECC, citizens around the country are adding the locations and timelines of the positive cases, as well as potential nearby hotspots and areas of interest that are closed for disinfection. The mappers hope the project will help people know if they may have potentially been exposed to the virus, as officials struggle to trace the contacts of new cases in recent weeks.

Cyclone Tauktae Hits India
Cyclone Tauktae made landfall in the Indian state of Gujarat on Monday after lashing much of India’s west coast over the weekend. An estimated 150,000 thousand people were evacuated from low-lying coastal regions, bringing a heavy humanitarian burden to a country in the middle of a surge of COVID-19 infections. Having largely passed by Mumbai’s metro population of 20 million, only twelve deaths have thus far been attributed directly to Tauktae. With the equivalent strength of a Category-3 hurricane, Tauktae is the strongest storm to hit India’s west coast in over 20 years and the fifth-strongest on record in the Arabian Sea.

Thousands of Migrants in Cueta
At least 2,700 migrants arrived in Ceuta, an enclave of Spain, yesterday, setting a record for number of migrant arrivals in a single day. Local officials report most of the migrants, including hundreds of minors, are from neighboring Morocco and arrived in Ceuta by swimming around border fences that jut out into the sea or walking across at low tide. Officials have reported surges in migration to Spanish territory, including Cueta and the Canary Islands, but remain far below levels seen in 2015 and 2016.

Q: At 85 characters, what is the longest geographical place name in the world?
A: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauo- tamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupo-kaiwhenuakitanatahu
Located near Porangahau in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, in English this translates as “the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as ‘landeater’, played his flute to his loved one.” We bet you can’t say this place 5 times in a row.
