Taiwan: PLA Drills Around Taiwan

Taiwan
PLA Drills Around Taiwan
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is conducting large-scale military drills in the Taiwan Strait as a warning to those in favor of Taiwanese independence. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) condemned China’s actions in the strait, deeming them unreasonable. Taiwan says the Chinese Communist Party is intensifying the army, navy, air, and rocket forces to sabotage peace in the Taiwan Strait. The military drills shortly followed Taiwanese president Lai Ching-te’s National Day address, where he declared China could not represent Taiwan but he voiced his support for cross-strait collaboration in tackling climate change and epidemic prevention. Internationally, these drills risk increasing tensions between mainland China and the United States, a supporter of Taiwan, and impede recent efforts to attract global investors to China.

Sudan
Army Moves in on Khartoum
At least 23 people were killed by an airstrike by the Sudanese Army that hit a market in the southern part of the capital, Khartoum, on Saturday. The strike was intended for a nearby camp of the paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been at war with the army for 18 months. The conflict has spurred what is widely acknowledged as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. The fighting has converged with famine and flooding to drive mass hunger within Sudan and displacements of millions internally and to Sudan’s neighbors. With aid agencies unable to operate on a scale in line with the conflict, there are no reliable ways to fully assess the number of people killed so far, with some estimates going as high as 150,000 people. Saturday’s victims are the latest from a new campaign by the army to take control of Khartoum, which began around 2 weeks ago.

This map depicts instances of fighting in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, from September 7 through October 4. The Sudanese Army is in the midst of a new campaign to take control of the city from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Click on the map to learn more.

Space
Europa Clipper to Jupiter
NASA plans to launch a new robotic mission to Jupiter this week. Dubbed Europa Clipper, the probe is the largest spacecraft it has ever built for a planetary science mission. Europa Clipper will take a path that swings to Mars and then back to Earth to use their gravities to boost the spacecraft’s speed enough to go to Jupiter. The probe’s mission is to study Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. This journey will cover 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometers) and will take 5.5 years to complete. Europa Clipper is projected to orbit Jupiter at around April 11, 2030, and will study the thickness of Europa’s icy shell, investigate its composition, and determine its geology. Europa is known to have an ocean of liquid water beneath the surface ice, raising the possiblity that the moon may currently sustain some form of life.

This map depicts the trajectory path Europa Clipper is going to take to Jupiter. Click on the map to learn more.

Friday’s Answer

Q: What U.S. state is home to the highest point in the Rocky Mountains of North America?

A: Colorado
The Rocky Mountains are a mountain range forming the cordilleran backbone of the great upland system that dominates the western North American continent. The highest point of the Rockies is Mount Elbert in Colorado which rises 14,440 feet (4,389 m) above sea level. Generally understood, the ranges included in the Rockies stretch from northern Alberta and British Columbia southward to New Mexico, a distance of some 3,000 miles (4,800 km). In places, the system is 300 or more miles wide.  The Rockies are bordered on the east by the Great Plains and on the west by the Interior Plateau and Coast Mountains of Canada and the Columbia Plateau and Basin and Range Province of the United States.
