Fuel Tanker Explosion
More than 60 people were killed and 70 injured when an overturned fuel tanker exploded in the town of Morogoro on Saturday. The town’s police commissioner said those who died were mainly residents and drivers of motorcycle taxis who gathered to collect leaking fuel from the tanker. Morogoro’s governor said the explosion was triggered after a man tried to pull out the truck’s battery. The nation’s president advised people against the dangers of stealing fuel.

Germany Calls Off Rainforest Aid
Germany said it will suspend $39 million in aid to Brazil that would go toward fighting deforestation, citing concern about an increase in rainforest clearings during President Jair Bolsonaro’s time in office. Deforestation in Brazil has surged 67% in 2019 so far, adding to the 1.3 million hectares (5,019 square miles) of “primary” tropical rainforest—the oldest and most important type of tropical growth—that Brazil lost last year. The country has consistently topped the deforestation list since records began, accounting for 46 percent of the world’s rainforest loss in 2018. Bolsonaro has historically been skeptical of environmental protection efforts, preferring to capitalize on the rainforest’s economic uses rather than try to preserve it, and when asked about the German aid, said “Brazil does not need that.”

Typhoon Lekima Strikes
44 people have died as of this morning since Typhoon Lekima made landfall in eastern China with torrential downpours and landslides over the weekend. The typhoon arrived in Zhejiang province, located between Taiwan and Shanghai, early Saturday morning. Officials say five million people have been affected, with over one million evacuated. Flights have been cancelled and a high-speed rail was temporarily shut down as the storm caused $2.1 billion in damages. Lekima is expected to weaken as it moves northwest into the ocean east of Beijing later this week. It is the ninth typhoon to hit China this year.
