The Netherlands
Russian Cyber Attack
Today, the Dutch Defense Minister announced that a team from the Netherlands’ military intelligence agency prevented a Russian cyber attack at the global Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague this April. Details reveal that four Russian intelligence officers from the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, conducting the cyber-attack were traveling on diplomatic passports and were expelled from the Netherlands, just hours after the attempted attack. As a direct result of today’s announcement, the U.S. Justice Department has charged seven Russian military intelligence officers with conspiracy, identity theft, and wire fraud, among other charges. Furthermore, the British Defense Minister has also accused the Russians of carrying out a series of worldwide cyber-attacks. The Russian Foreign Ministry currently denies all allegations. This map depicts the location of The Hague in the Netherlands, where the cyber attack on the OPCW took place. Amazon Wage Hike
To keep up with their Prime membership 2-day shipping, Amazon has exponentially expanded the number of fulfillment centers and distribution facilities across the country, placing them near densely-populated areas, creating a massive workforce of minimum wage workers. This has increased its leverage in the economy, and subsequently politics. Amazon announced, starting next month, it plans to increase their minimum wage to $15 an hour. With their sheer number of workers, Amazon has the power to influence workers wages across the country by pressuring competitors to follow suit. This could initiate a rise wages across the country – the Federal minimum wage is still at $7.25. This animated map depicts how Amazon spread across the U.S. over the past 20 years.
