United States
Macron & Trump Unite
French President Emmanuel Macron is visiting Washington this week. President Macron and U.S. President Donald Trump went to Mount Vernon to discuss internet regulations and midterm elections. The two used golden shovels to plant Macron’s gift to Trump, a European Sessile oak tree that had been plucked from the Belleau Woods, where 9,000 American troops lost their lives during World War I. Trump exclaimed that it is “truly fitting” that he is hosting the leader of the United States’ oldest ally for his first state visit as President. Arctic Sea
Mysterious Ice Circles
The annual NASA airborne mission over both poles found mysterious ‘holes’ in the Arctic Sea. Mission scientist, John Sonntag, spotted the ice holes 50 miles northwest of Canada’s Mackenzie River Delta. Researchers say that they have never seen anything like this before. They are unsure of the circumstances that could lead to the semicircle-shaped features surrounding the holes. There are suggestions that the holes may be the result of warm water melting through the ocean or seals biting through the thin ice. NASA is researching the cause of the ice holes. This map depicts the ice circles structure. Click on the map to learn more.

A: 10,994 meters
In 2010, the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping measured the depth of the Challenger Deep at 10,994 meters below sea level. If Mount Everest were placed at this location it would be covered by over one mile of water.
