Turkey
Erdogan Election
On Sunday, Turkey reelected President Tayyip Erdogan for another 5 year term in office. One of the most popular but polarizing presidents in modern Turkish history, Erdogan received 52.6% of the votes and was granted a majority win. New legislation as of last year gives the president more power over the government and curtails the authority of parliament, in a move criticized by Erdogan’s opponents. In his acceptance speech, President Erdogan pledged his military authorities would crack down on terrorist organizations and help to restore Syria so that the many refugees living in Turkey could return home. This map depicts the presidential election results in Turkey. Click on the map to learn more.

Algeria
Migrants Left Behind
Algeria has expelled more than 13,000 migrants to the Sahara Desert over the past 14 months, including pregnant women and children. Thousands of migrants were rounded up in buses, dropped in the desert, and pointed towards the direction of Niger, sometimes at gunpoint. Under temperatures of up to 118 degrees Fahrenheit, the expelled migrants were abandoned without food or water, forcing them to walk through the desert, searching for rescue. Since October 2017, Algeria’s mass exclusion of migrants has expanded while the European Union provided financial aid to North African countries to help with the migration and refugee crisis. According to the International Organization for Migration, for every refugee who dies crossing the Mediterranean Sea, two more die in the Sahara Desert. This map depicts the paths migrants take after they are expelled from Algeria. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
7,700 Acres Burn
Authorities have ordered the evacuation of 2,500 residents of a rural community in Northern California as a wildfire threatens further damage in the Spring Valley area. A dozen structures have burned as the wind-driven fires devour acres of dry brush in the California hills. Dubbed the Pawnee Fire, which erupted shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday in Lake County, 70 miles north of Napa, the blaze is one of several burning in the region this weekend, as erratic winds and high temperatures put authorities on high alert. Residents have been asked to conserve water for use in putting out the fire. This map depicts the location of the Pawnee Fire.
