Turkey
Response to Office Attack
The Turkish military is striking Syrian and Iraqi sites connected to Kurdish militants following an attack on the headquarters of the company Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) yesterday. At least two people were identified as being responsible for the attack that killed five people and injured 22 others. The Turkish government claims the alleged perpetrators, who have been “neutralized,” were connected to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a militant group fighting for the establishment of a state for the Kurdish people in the Middle East. The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the UK, and the US. TAI, with its headquarters outside the Turkish capital, Ankara, is one of Turkey’s leading aerospace companies developing both civlian and military products. The attack on TAI’s headquarters took place as a major trade fair for defense and aerospace industries was being held in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul.

Violence Surges in Sinaloa
On Tuesday, violence escalated in Mexico’s Sinaloa state with a shootout in Culiacán, where Mexican troops killed 19 suspected cartel members and arrested a local leader. This clash, involving over 30 armed operatives, signals a shift under President Claudia Sheinbaum, showing a more forceful stance against cartels. Violence in the Sinaloa region has erupted as the local cartel has split between factions loyal to Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and the son of cartel co-founder Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as “El Chapo.” Despite military intervention, ongoing shootings and abductions disrupt daily life in Culiacán, with businesses and schools closed amid widespread fear and uncertainty.

Colombia
Funding Push for Biodiversity
Biodiversity is declining more quickly within key protected areas than outside them, according to research that scientists say is a “wake-up call” to global leaders discussing how to stop nature loss at the UN’s Cop16 talks in Colombia. Protecting 30% of land and water for nature by 2030 is one of the key targets defined in a landmark global agreement in 2022. Around 17.5% of land and 8.4% of marine areas are now protected – an increase of half a percentage point for each since 2022. However, designating more areas as protected is not necessarily resulting in better outcomes for biodiversity. Corruption, political instability, and a lack of resources in developing countries that hold much of the Earth’s megabiodiverse regions are key reasons why conservation laws are not implemented. Protected areas and Indigenous territories continue to be threatened by oil, gas, and mining concessions as well as the the effects of the ongoing climate crisis, with increasing wildfires and droughts.

Q: What is the largest mountain area in the northern Great Plains of the United States?
A: The Black Hills
The Great Plains, a broad expanse of flatland in North America, is interrupted by several small mountain areas. The Black Hills, chiefly in western South Dakota, are the largest group. The name of the range in Lakota is “Pahá Sápa,” and it has been the spiritual and cultural epicenter for the Lakota people for centuries. The Black Hills rise like a large island from the sea, occupying an oval area of about 100 mi (160 km) north-south by 50 mi (80 km) east-west. At Black Elk Peak, they reach an altitude of 7,216 ft (2,199 m) and have an effective relief over the plains of 2,000 or 3,000 ft (610 or 910 m) This mountain mass is a flat-arched, dome-like structure, now well dissected by radiating consequent streams.
