United Kingdom
British Ballots
The United Kingdom votes today in their general election to decide the Prime Minister and the members of parliament. The main candidates in this election are Theresa May of the Conservative Party and Jeremy Corbyn of the Labour Party. Current Prime Minister May has only been in office for about one year but has called this referendum in the hopes of securing more conservative parliament members for the impending negotiations with the EU concerning Brexit. While there are still many ballots to be cast and the situation could quickly change, early predictions are announcing a Conservative Party victory.

This map shows the strongholds of each major British political party. The Conservative Party is represented by blue and their main liberal rival, the Labour Party, is shown in red. Click on the map to learn more.

North Korea
Missile Madness
Earlier this Thursday, North Korean military fired ballistic missiles off the coast of the city of Wonsan. The missiles flew about 125 miles before falling into the water. Experts believe this was a short range land-to-ship missile test. This test comes almost immediately after South Korea decided to suspend further deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system until they conducted a thorough environmental assessment of its effects. In the past several months, North Korea has continued to conduct missile tests that directly go against the UN’s sanctions of ramping down the production of missiles and nuclear weapons.

India
Violence in India Continues
Five farmers were killed in the Indian city of Khandwa in the state of Madhya Pradesh while protesting for better produce prices and debt forgiveness. The strike began last week when farmers dumped vegetables and milk on local roads. Fresh produce prices have more than doubled in cities like Mumbai. Two-thirds of India’s 1.3 billion population depend on farming for their economic livelihood. However, the farming sector accounts for only 14% of India’s GDP. More than 1600 farmers have committed suicide in 2016 due to crop failure and debt.

Morocco
Ancient Secrets
New archaeological findings in Morocco have shed light on the origin of homo sapiens, the human species. In Jabel Irhoud, in the mountains of Morocco, archaeologists have found human skulls dating back 300,000 years, making humans around 100,000 years older than previously believed. Humans were originally believed to have originated 200,000 years ago in Ethiopia in a region known as the “Garden of Eden” in East Africa, but these findings discredit that hypothesis. Jabel Irhoud, in Northwest Africa, is a radically different environment than the plains of Ethiopia, meaning these findings create much more mysteries about our species.

This map shows the location of Morocco in Africa and Jabel Irhoud in relation to the capital, Marrakesh. Click on the map to learn more about these findings.

Maps Do It Better

Do you believe climate change affects you personally?
Climate change is not a new topic to Americans, with the majority overwhelmingly believing that global warming is happening. However, fewer believe it will harm them personally. The NY Times explores this concept using data released by Yale researchers which give a detailed view of the public’s opinion on global warming. According to the data, the states that talk about climate change are the ones that are constantly affected by extreme weather such as droughts in the West and hurricanes along the East Coast. Do you believe climate change is affecting you personally?

The map depicts the percentage of adults who believe climate change affects them personally or that it will harm people in the U.S. Click the map to read more.

GeoQuestion

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Where is the driest place on Earth?

A: McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
Also (ironically) known as the “Antarctic Oasis,” Dry Valleys has not received any precipitation for over 2 million years! Despite this, there is still much ice covering the ground due to the extreme cold. In addition to this, wind speeds reach over 200 miles per hour, making Dry Valleys one of the most hostile locations on Earth.
