United Kingdom
Julian Assange Arrested
Julian Assange, WikiLeaks co-founder, was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London for breaking rules of his bail and “on behalf of US authorities.” He has been living in the embassy since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden for a sexual assault case, which was dropped in 2017, and extradition to the U.S. for espionage and other crimes. The Ecuadorian government withdrew asylum, and the president, Lenin Moreno, said this was due to Assange’s “discourteous and aggressive behavior.” Moreno accused Assange of violating international conventions, with the most recent being in January when WikiLeaks leaked Vatican documents. Assange is in custody and will be presented before Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Philippines
Newly Discovered Species
Fossilized bones and teeth recently found in Luzon, Phillippines reveal a long-lost cousin of the modern human species, Homo luzonesis. Discovered in Callao Cave by a team of scientists, the seven small teeth and six bones reveal a previously unknown species which lived about 50,000 to 67,000 years ago. The new information challenges how anthropologists and other researchers understand human migration and evolution. Scientists are speculating the origin of this species and how and when it arrived on the island of Luzon.

This map depicts the location of Callao Cave on Luzon and also a speculative timeline of Homo luzonesis. Click on the map to learn more.
