United Kingdom
Local Elections
Mayoral and council elections are occurring throughout England and Northern Ireland. With about 2/3 of the results in, the Conservative party has lost nearly 800 council seats. Analysts attributed the loss to UK Prime Minister Teresa May and the party’s handling of Brexit. On the other hand, the Liberal Democrat party has gained 455 seats and the Green Party has gained 116 seats.  No elections are taking place in Scotland, Wales, or London.

Saint Lucia
Cruise Ship Quarantined
On Thursday, health officials in Saint Lucia quarantined a cruise ship carrying an estimated 300 people after confirming a case of measles aboard. The Freewinds cruise ship- owned and operated by the Church of Scientology- was moored at Port Castries after a crew member was diagnosed. Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Health and Wellness Chief Medical Officer stated no one has been allowed to disembark since its arrival but they are providing the measles vaccine to passengers aboard. Within the U.S. there are 704 cases confirmed for 2019, with nearly three-quarters of the cases occurring in unvaccinated people.

United States
Major Flooding
Several rivers throughout the north-central United States remain above flood stage or just below flood stage. Flooding from heavy rains and snowmelt plagued areas from Michigan to the South, with communities along the Mississippi River continuing to sandbag in an attempt to stave off floodwaters. One region severely affected is Davenport, Iowa, which has been flooded since Wednesday, a day after the swollen Mississippi River broke through the temporary levee. The city flooding was so severe that it was recorded as being the highest level flooding within the last 157 years.
