United Kingdom: Thousands of Travelers Stranded

United Kingdom
Thousands of Travelers Stranded
An estimated 150,000 vacationers were left stranded abroad after British travel agency Thomas Cook folded on Sunday. The firm ceased trading, laid off its workforce, and canceled its booked flights after failing to raise funds to continue operating. This left the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority to charter flights from as far away as Malaysia to bring passengers home in the country’s largest repatriation effort since World War II. The largest number of travelers are currently stranded in Spain, Turkey, Tunisia, and Greece.

Manufacturers Warn Against “No-Deal”
Amid a looming deadline, Europe’s carmakers are warning about the potentially devastating effects that a “no-deal” Brexit would have on the industry.  CEO of the UK’ Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, stated, a no-deal Brexit would cause “irreversible and severe damage.”  The UK’s car industry is vitally tied to the rest of Europe’s car industry in a supply chain of some 30,000 separate vehicle parts, many of them crossing a border more than once.  A no-deal leave is estimated to cost the UK $60,000 for every minute of stalled vehicle production.  Additionally, under a no-deal Brexit, the UK  would lose preferential trade arrangements with 30 countries including Turkey, South Africa, Japan and South Korea.

Antarctica
West Antarctic Ice Melting
Antarctica has lost 150 billion metric tons due to atmospheric and oceanic warming each year since 2005, almost all of it from the West Antarctic ice sheet. This rate is quicker than previous models, based on aerial survey flights from the 1970s and satellite imagery from the 1990s, had predicted. Most melting in Antarctica occurs when ice sheets slide into the ocean, which has already caused a 14 mm rise in global sea levels since 1979. Estimates for future sea-level rise vary from 16 cm to more than 50 cm by 2100.

Q: With an area of 728 square miles (1,886 square km), which two volcanoes make up the Hawaiian island of Maui?

A: Haleakala and Mauna Kahalawai
Haleakalā, which translates to “House of the Sun” is a 10,000 foot shield volcano that makes up 75% of Maui’s land mass. The other 25% comes from Mauna Kahalawai, which is an erodded shield volcano, and is known as “House of the Moon.”
