United States
50% Adults Vaccinated
Yesterday, the United States officially reached the milestone of vaccinating over half of all adults against COVID-19 with at least one dose. For adults over 65, the percentage reaches over 80%. The COVID-19 vaccination rollout, the largest vaccination campaign in the country’s history, has resulted in approximately 209.4 million doses distributed to date. According to NBC’s Vaccine Tracker, Maine and New Mexico have the highest vaccination percentage across the U.S., with approximately 32.3% of their respective populations fully vaccinated. New Hampshire, however, has the highest doses per capita with 58,266 doses per 100,000 people.

South Africa
Table Mountain Fires
A fire began near a memorial to politician Cecil Rhodes on Table Mountain, near Cape Town, has continued to spread, threatening residents and property in the area. About 250 firefighters have been battling the blaze, which has been fanned by strong winds and is fueled by dry brush and low humidity. South African emergency workers have evacuated three 17-story residential buildings overlooking the city and the University of Cape Town confirmed that all students have been evacuated from campus following damage to the university’s library and other historic landmarks. City officials said a suspect had been detained amid speculation that the original fire was an act of arson, and that additional fires have been intentionally started. Experts are estimating that at least 3 days are needed to contain the blaze.

Mars
Ingenuity Takes Flight
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) confirmed this morning that the Ingenuity spacecraft, a small helicopter which had been carried inside NASA’s Perseverance rover, has successfully executed the first powered, controlled flight on Mars. The craft lifted about 10 feet (3 m) off the surface in the Jezero crater and stayed in flight for 39 seconds, observed by Perseverance over 200 feet (61 m) away. Given Mars’ thin atmosphere, Ingenuity’s twin rotors had to spin over 2,400 revolutions per minute to lift its tissue box-sized body. This first test of controlled flight on Mars opens a range of possibilities for further observations of the surface where earth-bound rovers cannot safely travel.

Q: With an area of just over 14,800 square miles (38,000 sq km), what small country constitutionally mandates at least 60 percent of its area must remain permanently covered by forests?
A: Bhutan
The Kingdom of Bhutan is located along the eastern edge of the Himalayan mountain chain, bordering China to the north and India to the south. While 70% of its land is currently forested and rich with biodiversity, some deforestation has been increasing in recent years for hydroelectric power generation, agriculture, and mining.
