United States
Abortion Restrictions
On Wednesday, Alabama’s Governor signed a bill to ban nearly all abortions in the state after a 25 to 6 vote by the Senate. The ban prohibits abortions even in cases of rape and incest but allows abortions if the mother’s life is threatened. The bill challenges the more than 40 years of federal abortion protections under Roe v. Wade and could also punish doctors who perform the procedure with life in prison. In related news, on Thursday, Missouri lawmakers also passed a bill which would outlaw nearly all abortions at eight weeks of pregnancy after a 24 to 10 vote.

Niger
Militants Kill Soldiers
On Tuesday, gunmen killed at least 17 Nigerian troops in an ambush near Tongo Tongo. The soldiers were searching for militants who attacked a high-security prison, but one of the soldiers’ vehicles drove into a landmine, and the militants started shooting. Several jihadist groups are active in that area, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. Niger and other countries have been facing a growing militant threat from several Islamist groups.

Saudi Arabia
Drone Pipeline Attack
The Saudi Energy Minister, Khalid Al Falih, reported two oil pumping stations along the Aramco East West Pipeline were the site of explosive-carrying drone attacks. He condemned the attack, perpetrated by Houthi rebels, as an act of terrorism against the global oil supply. A Houthi spokesperson, Mohammed Abdel-Salam, said the attack was meant to deter Saudi Arabia’s “aggression” and “the crimes they are committing every day against the Yemeni people.” Aside from minor damages caused by the attack, concerns have been expressed about the increasing sophistication of technology used by rebel groups.
