World
Freshwater Findings
A 14-year study by NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite reveals major shifts in the world’s underground freshwater distribution. The satellite studied 34 different regions and found that wetland areas are getting wetter and dry areas are getting drier.  A number of factors contribute to changes in groundwater, however, climate change and unbridled water consumption by humans have played the largest role. The scientists behind this study confirm that many areas of the world are very close to “becoming the next Cape Town.” This map depicts patterns of groundwater levels across regions.
