Arctic
Melting Away
In a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Arctic seawater is warming and sea ice is melting at an alarming rate. According to the report, “the far northern region is warming twice as fast as the rest of the globe and has reached a level of warming that’s unprecedented in modern times”. 2017 is ranked as the Arctic’s second-warmest year in at least 1,500 years, after the record setting numbers in 2016. About 85 researchers from a dozen countries contributed to the findings and say it is clear that “human-induced climate change is contributing to making the Arctic a warmer and more dynamic place”.*The American Geographical Society has and continues to be a main supporter of Arctic exploration, research and preservation since the Society’s founding in 1851.
