Amazon Picks HQ2 Locations
On Tuesday, Amazon announced it has chosen to split it’s second headquarter location between Long Island City, New York City and Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Both locations will receive a $2.5 billion investment from Amazon, and each will employ more than 25,000 workers over time. The company also said it would develop a smaller Operations and Logistics facility in Nashville, creating 5,000 jobs. During the headquarter bidding process, Amazon narrowed 238 bids to 20 finalists, including Chicago, Denver, Indianapolis, and Miami. Concerns are being voiced about the potential impact on housing and transportation the billion dollar company could have on the two metropolitan sites.

Oil Prices Drop
Oil prices reached an eight-month low yesterday amid concerns of slowing international demand. Oil conglomerate, Opec, reduced their global forecast for next year; about 70,000 barrels less per day are expected to be produced. After oil prices hit a four-year high this past October, Saudi Energy Minister, Khalid al-Falih, stated Monday that Opec agreed to cut oil production to avoid overproduction in the coming year. The international price benchmark, Brent crude, dropped 7% to $65.11 per barrel, the lowest price since March.

Overuse of Antibiotics
The World Health Organization (WHO) published a review of antibiotic prescribing in 65 countries that warns of significant overuse of antibiotics in humans, animals, and agriculture. Antibiotics are often inappropriately prescribed for viral infections, and half of all doses are prescribed to industrial farm animals to help them grow. Overuse of broad-spectrum drugs, meant for use when first and second choice drugs fail, is particularly dangerous, as bacteria can rapidly evolve and become resistant to treatment. The report said deaths due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) could surpass annual cancer fatalities. Globally one of the largest concerns about antibiotics is drug-resistant tuberculosis, which according to the WHO remains the world’s deadliest disease; 490,000 people have multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).
