General Motors Layoffs
General Motors (GM) announced Monday that it would close 8 plants, including five plants in the U.S. and Canada by the end of 2019. The closing North American plants are located in Oshawa, Ontario; Detroit and Warren Michigan; Lordstown, Ohio; and Baltimore, Maryland. 14,000 jobs (15% of the company’s workers) will be cut – including 8,000 white-collar workers and 6,000 factory workers (3,300 from the U.S. and 2,500 from Canada). The layoffs come with the company’s recent moves to shift to electric and ride-sharing vehicles, while eliminating numerous poor-selling traditional models. The company also announced it would be closing one of its South Korea plants as well as two other international facilities yet to be publicized.

Mars
InSight Lands Safely
NASA’s InSight landed today in the Elysium Planitia region of Mars – located along the equator, 373 miles from Curiosity’s landing site, Gale Crater. Using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport (InSight), the location of the landing site was chosen for its flat surface as well as suitable workspace with adequate sunlight. While previous missions assessed the canyons, volcanoes, rocks, and soil of Mars’ surface, InSight will measure the information beneath the surface. Researchers plan to record the seismic waves traveling through the interior structure of Mars, measure how much heat is flowing out of the planet, and use the lander’s radios to assess the wobble of the planet’s rotation axis.
