Alarming Deforestation Rates
On Thursday, the Global Forest Watch (GFW) reported an estimated 12 million hectares of tropical rainforests were lost in 2018. Using data from the University of Maryland, the group found that 25% of the loss occurred in Brazil, with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia each accounting for about 10%. In addition, some 3.6 million hectares of the 25% of the deforestation in Brazil were of primary tropical forest. GFW also noted that in 2018, several hotspots of primary forest loss occurred near or within indigenous territories. The Ituna Itata reserve, home to some of the world’s last uncontacted tribes, saw more than 4,000 hectares of illegal clearing. According to the report, 2018 had the fourth highest rate of forest loss since records began in 2001.

Emperor Penguin Chicks Drown
Thousands of emperor penguin chicks from the Halley Bay colony on the Brunt Ice Shelf drowned when the sea-ice they were being raised on collapsed during a severe weather event. It seemed to have occurred in 2016 but was only recently discovered from satellite imagery. Halley Bay was the second largest penguin colony in the world, but the penguins have failed to raise chicks for three consecutive years due to local sea-ice conditions. However, the nearby Dawson-Lambton colony has increased in size, indicating that adult emperors are moving there to find better breeding grounds.
