United States
Asylum Deal
The United States signed a deal yesterday with Honduras that would allow US immigration authorities to send asylum seekers to Honduras while they await review. Along with El Salvador and Guatemala, Honduras is part of the Central American “Northern Triangle”, through which thousands of migrants pass seeking asylum in the United States. According to a Honduran newspaper, El Heraldo, approximately 26,000 migrants would be subject to being sent to Honduras temporarily. The deal is meant to ease pressure on immigration authorities at the U.S.- Mexico border, however, critics are concerned the deal would send asylum seekers back to an area of extreme violence and poverty.

Chemical Plant Fire
A large fire broke out in the early hours of the morning at the Lubrizol chemical factory in the northern port city of Rouen, France. There are currently no confirmed victims. While 200 firefighters fight the blaze, air quality tests are being performed to assess possible air pollution. There is a potential risk of pollution spilling into the Seine river, one of France’s largest rivers, flowing through Paris, and emptying into the English Channel.

Earthquake Kills 20
A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shook the Maluku Islands in northeast Indonesia early Thursday morning. 20 are reported dead, with 100 injured and over 2,000 evacuated. The disaster awoke residents of the nearby city, Ambon, triggering landslides and turning buildings into rubble. Roughly 12 aftershocks struck the city, with one measuring 5.6. The city’s hospital was surrounded by makeshift huts to shelter evacuated patients. On the coast, citizens fled to higher ground, however, the national disaster agency spokesperson stated there is no threat of a tsunami. Earthquakes are common to Indonesia; last year alone there were 6 recorded quakes above a magnitude of 6.0.
