Border Barriers Approved
Congress approved a border funding bill yesterday in order to avoid a second government shutdown this year. The bill approves $1.375 billion to be allocated towards building barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border; far shorter than President Trump’s original request for $5.7 billion. The budget approved is enough to build 55 miles of barrier in Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy and Starr counties in Texas. Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, announced President Trump will approve the bill and shortly after declare a national emergency to allocate funding towards a border wall.

Deadly Bombing
On Thursday, at least 40 Indian paramilitaries were killed and many others wounded in an attack in the Pulwama district — about 15 miles (25 kilometers) from Kashmir’s capital, Srinagar, in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Officials said the suicide attack, which targeted a convoy of 78 vehicles carrying some 2,500 personnel, ripped apart two buses. The bombing is believed to be the single deadliest terror attack in the region’s history. The Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility. Pakistani officials are denying India’s claim that they played any role in the attack.

Conservation Expansion
The Senate passed a sweeping public lands conservation bill, protecting approximately 1.3 million acres of wilderness and hundreds of miles of wild rivers across the country. The bill permanently removes over 370,000 acres of mining areas around national parks including Yellowstone, and also authorizes a program by which offshore-drilling revenue can be spent on conservation efforts. The bill also establishes four new national monuments which honor heroes including Civil War soldiers and a civil rights icon. The bill passed 92-8 with support from both parties and now heads to the House.
