United States
California Mudslides
As of Wednesday, at least 13 people were killed, an estimated 25 people injured and several others unaccounted for when flash floods and mudslides bulldozed their way through southern California. On Tuesday, torrential rain sent mud and boulders sliding down vegetation-stripped hills which were caused by the recent wildfires. The force of the mudslides were so intense that it  pushed homes off their foundations, uprooted trees and washed away dozens of cars. Rescue missions continue as first-responders search for survivors.

This map depicts the areas under evacuation orders and where the Thomas wildfire burned away the vegetation. Click on the map to learn more.

Caribbean
7.6 Earthquake
On Tuesday, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the Caribbean region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake originated in the sea about “125 miles north-northeast of Barra Patuca, Honduras, close to 200 miles southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands, and occurred about 6 miles below the surface.” The earthquake was so powerful that a tsunami warning was issued for the region but was canceled an hour later. The earthquake was stronger than the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010. So far, no damages or injuries have been reported from this event.
