Cancelled Taliban Talks
Over the weekend, President Trump announced he is cancelling peace talks with the Taliban.  The announcement to end the ongoing negotiations came after an attack by the Taliban in Kabul, Afghanistan which killed an American soldier.  The peace talks could have seen an end to the 18-year war. As part of the agreement, the U.S. would withdraw troops from Afghanistan and the Taliban would ensure that no militant groups, such as the Islamic State, continue their activities in the country.

British Airways Pilot Strike Causes Cancellations
A two-day pilot walkout began this morning, leading British Airways to cancel nearly all of its scheduled flights. The planned strikes come after the airline and the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA) failed to reach a mutually agreeable pay deal during a round of negotiations in August. The union estimates that British Airways, which carries 145,000 passengers per day, could see costs of £40 million each day as a result of the strikes.

This map depicts the only 24 British Airways flights that were in the air at 8:45 this morning. Click on the map to learn more.

Cargo Ship Capsizes off Georgia Coast
The 656-foot Golden Ray cargo ship departed Brunswick, Georgia early Sunday morning before catching fire and eventually overturning in St. Simons Sound. The Coast Guard has suspended earlier efforts to rescue four missing crew members, citing safety concerns as the vessel remains turned on its side. The ship, bound for Baltimore, was carrying a total of 24 people and approximately 4,200 vehicles.

Friday’s Answer

Q: On which Latin American peninsula will you find an impact crater formed by the asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs?

A: The Yucatán Peninsula
The Chicxulub crater was formed by an asteroid up to 50 miles (81 km) in size approximately 66 million years ago. The crater sits at approximately 93 miles (150 km) in diameter, stretching across the peninsula and into the Gulf of Mexico.  It was discovered in the late 1970’s during oil explorations.
