COVID-19 in Prisons
Prisons across the United States are reporting high levels of COVID-19 infections where social distancing measures are difficult to implement. At Riker’s Island prison in New York City, 9.1% of inmates have contracted COVID-19, at a much higher rate than the total population in the city, at 1.6%. In Ohio, prison inmates comprise 21% of the state’s total confirmed cases. The New York Times has created an animated map showing the in and out flows of prisoners in facilities across the United States. Approximately 20,000 people across the U.S. enter and exit prisons each week, demonstrating the risk of spread from these centralized hotspots. While many consider prisons to be isolated areas, this map highlights the constant movement of the prison population, and may assist policy makers anticipate the impact of prison outbreaks on surrounding communities and workers families.

Greece
Migrant Camp Fire
On Saturday, a fire ripped through one of the largest migrant camps in Greece resulting in widespread damage and leaving many without shelter of any sort. The death of an Iraqi woman sparked unrest at the Vial refugee camp on the island of Chios and the resulting damage and blaze has destroyed many of the facilities at the camp. Recent weeks have seen migrant camps being put under quarantine by authorities in an attempt to keep local residents and asylum seekers apart in the battle to stop the spread of COVID-19. There are more than 5,000 people living in the Vial refugee camp which was initially intended to only accommodate 1,000 people. Greece continues to bear the brunt of Europe’s migration crisis while the world is battling against the spread of coronavirus.
