United States
COVID Rampant in Illinois
The number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals in Illinois has surged by 30% in a week, reaching a high of 5,581. Due to the rapidly spreading outbreak, Chicago has issued a stay-at-home advisory which came into effect from 6am yesterday morning. Gov. Pritzker has said that a new stay-at-home order for the entire state of Illinois might be the only option left if the numbers do not turn around. This map by the Illinois Department of Public Health uses data collected through contact tracing and shows the public and private schools in the state with potential exposures to COVID-19. School data show the number of confirmed and probable cases of those who listed a school as a place visited. The pandemic has caused school districts to take diverging strategies on remote and in-class learning, with about 60% of students learning remotely at present.

Asia
World’s Largest New Trading Bloc
Fifteen countries representing 2.2 billion people of the world’s population, and nearly a third of the global economy, have formed the world’s largest trading bloc. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a free trade agreement between the ten Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and five of their major trading partners. The fifteen signatories are Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The agreement was signed at the Vietnam-hosted virtual ASEAN Summit and once ratified by member countries, will take effect within two years. The pact is seen as an extension of China’s influence in the region. The deal does not include the United States, which withdrew from a rival trade pact, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in 2017. While China already has a number of bilateral trade agreements, this is the first time it has signed up for a regional multilateral trade pact.

Nicaragua
Hurricane Iota Makes Landfall
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Iota has made landfall on the coast of Nicaragua near the town of Haulover at 10:40 pm ET with maximum sustained winds reaching 155 miles per hour. Originally, classed as a category five storm, it weakened slightly to a category four hurricane as it ripped towards the coast of Central America. Forecasters are warning of a devastating storm surge, life-threatening winds that will cause catastrophic flash flooding, and landslides. Evacuations were made compulsory in neighboring Honduras as well as for those living in the northeast of Nicaragua. The region was recently hit by Hurricane Eta, whose torrential rains left soils saturated with water and more prone to new landslides and floods. Residents fear local properties would not stand a chance with Hurricane Iota coming so soon after Hurricane Eta. The NHC says the storm should dissipate by Wednesday night.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: At about 40 miles (65 km) long, which coastal lake is Asia’s largest brackish lagoon?

A: Chilika Lake
Located in eastern Odisha state, India, Chilika Lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow spit that varies between 328 feet (100 m) to several miles. Estimated to have formed about 3500 to 4000 years ago,  the pear-shaped lagoon is about 5 to 13 miles (8 to 20 km) wide, and about 6 feet (2 meters) deep.  It is the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian sub-continent.
