United States: COVID-Related Hunger

United States
COVID-Related Hunger
Analysis of new federal data shows more Americans are going hungry now than at any point since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts say the economic downturn resulting in unprecedented levels of unemployment over the last few months has contributed to more hunger in the United States today than at any point since the Census Bureau began collecting comparable data about households’ ability to get enough food in 1998. This map by The Washington Post shows the share of people in households across the U.S. that reported they sometimes, or often, didn’t have enough food in the past seven days. The figures show one in eight people, or 26 million Americans reported they often didn’t have enough to eat in the past seven days. Houston, Texas has seen the worst surge in hunger in the U.S., where more than one in five adults have reported going hungry recently with government relief programs having already expired or due to expire at the end of the year.

Bangladesh
Relocating Rohingya Refugees
On Thursday, authorities in Bangladesh begun relocating thousands of Rohingya refugees from camps near the Myanmar border to Bhasan Char island despite calls by human rights groups to halt the process. According to reports, police escorted the first group of 1,000 refugees in buses from Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar for the journey to Chittagong Port and then on to Bhasan Char. Formed from a buildup of silt in the Bay of Bengal only 20 years ago, the island’s exposure to extreme weather and distance (21 miles / 34 kilometers) from the mainland, has caused concern since Bangladesh first raised the idea in 2015. Despite claims from the Bangladesh government stating the relocation is voluntary, rights groups say refugees have been listed without their consent. They also added that since April, around 300 refugees who were brought to the island after several months at sea attempting to flee Bangladesh, have said they are being held against their will, and have complained of human rights violations. In 2017, more than 730,000 Rohingya fled Myanma following a military-led crackdown the United Nations says was executed with genocidal intent.

World
2020 One of Warmest Years
According to recent data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), 2020 is on track to be one of the three warmest years on record. Average global temperatures are set to be approximately 1.2 °C above the pre-industrial (1850-1900) level. In the Siberian Arctic, which saw some of the warmest weather this year, temperatures were more than 5 °C above average. WMO estimates 80% of the global ocean experienced a marine heatwave this year, leading to increased ocean acidification. A record breaking number of hurricanes formed over the Atlantic Ocean this season, and extreme heat events and wildfires occurred across the globe. Though COVID-19 lockdowns were expected to curb carbon emissions, atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases continued to rise, likely leading to increased warming in years to come.

This map depicts the global temperatures this year compared to averages from 1981-2010. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which covered 95,576 square miles (247,542 square km) and lasted until 1991, is now made up of how many countries?

A: 6 Countries
The six independent countries are Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Kosovo which self-declared independence in 2008 from Serbia is not included on the list despite being recognized by 111 UN countries including the United States and most members of the European Union (EU). Socialist Yugoslavia was formed in 1946 after Josip Broz Tito and his communist-led Partisans had helped liberate the country from German rule in 1944–45.  It lasted until June 25, 1991, when Slovenia and Croatia declared their secession from the Yugoslav federation.
